The history of Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo, which means “Fifth of May” in Spanish, is an annual celebration that has vastly grown in popularity in the United States. Over the years, it has even become more widely celebrated than in some parts of Mexico. The date commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. However, in the U.S., the date is more often erroneously defined as Mexico’s Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16.
